The Minsky Moment in Credit Cycles

Stability Breeds Instability
Hyman Minsky showed that long stretches of economic calm do not foster safety. Instead, stability encourages aggressive risk-taking and creates deep fragility.
Minsky mapped three distinct borrowing stages:
- Hedge Finance: Borrowers generate enough operating cash flow to pay back both interest and principal.
- Speculative Finance: Borrowers can only afford interest payments and must roll over the loan principal forever.
- Ponzi Finance: Borrowers cannot even afford interest; they rely entirely on asset prices inflating to borrow more.
When the financial system saturates with Ponzi borrowers, any sudden spike in interest rates forces fire-sales. Liquidity vanishes instantly, triggering a "Minsky Moment."
