Consumer Mirage
The spread between credit card delinquencies and the personal savings rate.
U.S. Consumer Mirage: Personal Savings vs. Credit Delinquency
Quarterly Telemetry // 1999–2026MEASUREMENT: PERSONAL SAVING RATE (PSAVERT, %) VS. CREDIT CARD DELINQUENCY (DRCCLACBS, %)
The Spread That Matters
Most analysts look at delinquency rates in a vacuum. "Oh, 3% isn't historically high," they say. They are missing the denominator.
The Consumer Mirage is the spread between Credit Card Delinquency and the Personal Savings Rate.
Why It Flashes Red
Historically, when savings are high, consumers can absorb debt shocks. When savings plummet while delinquency rises, you have a solvency crisis, not a liquidity crisis.
As of late 2025, the delta has inverted to levels not seen since 2008. The consumer is not just borrowing to spend; they are borrowing to survive.
The Trade
This signal suggests avoiding consumer discretionary stocks and rotating into consumer staples and debt collection agencies. The "strong consumer" narrative is a ghost story.
What is M2 in Money Supply?
M2 is the total cash and bank deposits moving through the real economy. It counts all the money you can spend today, plus the money you can get your hands on tomorrow.
Think of the money supply like water flowing into an economy. When banks create more dollars, the water level rises. M2 measures broad cash liquidity across three main buckets:
Paper Bills & Coins
Every physical banknote and coin carried in wallets, cash registers, and vaults outside the Federal Reserve.
Checking Deposits
Money stored in active transaction accounts that you can immediately swipe on debit cards or wire online.
Savings & Money Market
Short-term deposits and money market funds that can rapidly convert into spending cash within 24 hours.
Why Does the Seagull Track M2?
Prices do not climb because goods get greedy. Prices climb when central banks create more dollars than there are real things to buy. Between 2020 and 2022, the Federal Reserve expanded M2 by more than 26%. That flood of liquidity triggered the highest consumer inflation in 40 years.
When M2 slows down or contracts, cash leaves consumer pockets. People borrow more on credit cards to buy food, causing delinquencies to spike. That is why our Signal Lab correlates M2 directly with the Consumer Mirage and the House Price Index.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS // M2 TELEMETRY
[01] What is M2 in money supply? +
M2 is the broad measure of the money supply that includes all physical cash currency, checking deposits, savings accounts, and money market funds circulating in the economy. It measures all liquid money households and businesses can readily spend.
[02] Why is M2 money supply important? +
M2 money supply indicates economic liquidity and inflation risk. Rapid M2 expansion increases consumer prices and devalues cash, while M2 contraction tightens credit and increases debt delinquency pressure.
[03] How does M2 expansion dilute cash savings? +
When more money enters the economy without an equal jump in goods and services produced, each existing dollar represents a smaller slice of total production. This quietly reduces what your savings can buy.
